As West Point’s first and only competitive functional fitness team, the Black and Gold Team fills a singular space within the functional fitness community. Its cadets exemplify West Point’s commitment to physical excellence. In the last year, cadets have qualified for and participated in national-level competitions, such as the CrossFit Quarterfinals, TYR Wodapalooza, and the USA Functional Fitness National Collegiate Championship.
However, the Black and Gold Team encourages more than just physical excellence — it fosters character and leadership. As is the case with all West Point clubs, the Black and Gold Team mimics the leadership and organization of an Army unit. Therefore, a Cadet-in-Charge (CIC) is responsible for leading the club (with faculty supervision) and working with Assistant CICs to coordinate schedules, training, budgets, and travel.
West Point’s Functional Fitness Team fosters the leadership and dedication that will serve these young leaders as athletes and future Army officers.
While West Point’s core academic and military instruction receive federal funds, many programs fall outside the realm of federal funding and yet are of tremendous value to cadets. Thus, private funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations plays an important role in ensuring outstanding military, academic, character and physical education programs for our cadets.
Your donation to West Point’s Functional Fitness Team will significantly enhance its ability to train and compete at the national level. With your support, cadet members will be able to participate in off-site training and compete in national competitions such as Wodapalooza and the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge.
