There’s a big difference between working out and training. Both are valuable. Both get you moving. But you need to understand the difference to make progress, avoid frustration, and filter out all the noise.

What Is Working Out?

Working out is for health, looks, and mental well-being. It’s loose, fun, and has no time-bound goal. It can be anything from lifting heavy weights to walking your dog to doing sit-ups in your living room. You don’t have to be married to a method or follow any strict rules. It’s there to serve your lifestyle, not take over your life.

Working out may mean maxing out on deadlifts. On other days, it might mean a casual 20-minute bike ride. It can be mellow, or it can be intense. The point of working out is to elevate the time you spend outside the gym. It’s supposed to enhance your life, no matter how much you enjoy the workout. The freedom to do whatever you want and have fun with it. That’s the beauty of working out.

What Is Training?

Training is entirely different. You do training when you’re working toward a specific, time-bound goal. It’s not just exercise - it’s a process. Maybe you’re training for a competition, preparing for a marathon, or chasing a personal milestone. Whatever the goal, training demands purpose, focus, and discipline.

When you’re training, there’s intention behind every session. Everything you do, every set, every rep - has a reason. The exercises you choose, the weight you lift, the rest you take - it all ties back to the goal. Your life outside the gym has to align with your work inside the gym. Recovery, nutrition, and sleep become non-negotiables.

Training is serious. It’s structured, it’s intense, and it takes commitment. But training isn’t better than working out. It’s not more virtuous to have a goal. Your training sessions only matter to you. They don’t make you superior or give you the right to look down on someone who’s “just working out.” This includes yourself because no matter how hard you train, there will be times when you find yourself just working out.

The Difference Matters

Knowing whether you’re working out or training is essential because it helps you filter out the endless advice, trends, and nonsense that flood your social media feed. You can focus on what matters when you’re transparent about your actions.

  • If you’re working out, you’ve got freedom. Try the new kettlebell complex you saw on Instagram. Experiment with movements you’ve never done before. Play around, mix it up, and enjoy yourself. The only absolute rule is to show up consistently and give a reasonable effort.
  • If you’re training, you need focus. Training requires structure and discipline. If your competition is four weeks away, now isn’t the time to mess around with something new just because you saw your competitor doing it. Stick to your plan. Trust your methods. Execute with purpose.

If you’re working out: do whatever you damn, please. Try new things, go hard when you want to, and enjoy the freedom to experiment. Working out is about consistency and effort. Have fun with it.

If you’re training, bring intention to every session. Training is about showing up with focus, purpose, and discipline. Trust the process, stay consistent, and remember that everything you do outside the gym - sleep, recovery, and nutrition matters as much as what you do inside.

The most important thing? Know where you stand. Are you working out or training? Because when you know, you can make better decisions and get the most out of every session, whether you’re just having fun or chasing something bigger
